Credit note

A sent invoice cannot be taken back, because it is booked and perhaps already with the customer's bookkeeper. If it is wrong, or the customer returns the goods, you send a credit note: a document with the opposite sign that refers to the invoice and cancels it in full or in part. In Danish it is a kreditnota.

What is a credit note?

You sent invoice 1049 for 6,225 kr., but the price should have been 5,225 kr. You send a credit note for 1,000 kr. referring to invoice 1049, and the customer now owes 5,225 kr. The credit note is booked like an invoice with the opposite sign: revenue and output VAT go down, and the debtor account goes down.

For VAT the credit note is a voucher on a par with the invoice: it is numbered consecutively and refers to the invoice it corrects. If the customer gets the money back, that is a payment settled against the credit note; if the amount is to be set off against a new invoice, the two are settled against each other.

Credit note in Veneti

In Veneti you credit a customer invoice in the same number sequence, and the credit note is sent like the invoice: as a PDF by email or as an e-invoice through Peppol and NemHandel. It lands on Debtors with the opposite sign, and on the customer's account statement under Reporting you see the invoice, the credit note and what is open.

A credit note is the customer's document. If a booked entry without a customer has to be cancelled, that is a reversal, not a credit note.
